Be Prepared by Vera Brosgol
In this semi-autobiographical work, Vera Brosgol finds a certain niche at a Russian Orthodox summer camp in upstate New York. Her religion and culture set her apart from her friends, but she finds out about the camp from a girl at her church. Her single mother allows her and her brother to go and what Vera finds is a myriad of challenges, but nothing she can’t overcome.
From bullies to crushes to that feeling of not quite fitting in, Be Prepared is a touching yet light comedic view of the camp experience. Some cultural history is noted and some single-parent issues dealt with, and there are outhouse jokes!

I went to camp when I was a kid… Some memories were shaken out of the tree in this one!
