Waves is the autobiographical graphic novel of Chabbert’s experience of losing a child to miscarriage. Chabbert and her partner are nervous, but hopeful about their chances of carrying their baby boy to term. But complications put her on bedrest and eventually her body cannot handle the pregnancy. A support group and writing help her through the pain of the waves of grief. The bond between Chabbert and her wife is especially strong and the comfort they give each other is the heart of this book.
The artwork is memorable. It is the metaphor of the sea and being thrown about by life’s challenges that ties all parts of the novel together. The shading and coloring match the tragic and hopeful moments.
A powerful piece that shows a full range of support systems and therapy. Equally devastating and engaging.
These kinds of books are important.
