Jesse Sanchez is an in-your-face, smash to the nose, attack in a threadbare 3/4 length jersey and ripped jeans. She’s the Street Angel: bringing lost dogs back to their owners, beating the shit out of bullies, and helping her crew… oh and Santa. But there’s a dark undercurrent to her life and living on the street. Hunger and loneliness and trying to being heard. At one point she goes to juvie just so she can get 3 square meals a day.
I found myself yelling, YES!!!, multiple times while reading this book. She’s the kid you root for… Wilksboro is a neighborhood filled with the supernatural, the superhero, and a middle school with usual fixings. And there’s Jesse trying to live. There’s mystery and power and an authenticity in this character that I haven’t encountered in other another comic book persona.
This is a comic that I’ve seen repeatedly described as “punk rock.” And I see it: the art is so easily accessible, yet it’s sharp and bright. As with its themes of nonconformity, it’s big and blaring. Perfect for this young woman who get things done.
It will entertain, it will test you, and it will leave you wanting more. Street Angel!
Check out this very cool video with the artist, Jim Rugg:
