After her cargo ship is sunk by a hurricane, the robot Roz is marooned on a deserted island. Her crate is knocked open in the surf and a curious otter presses her activation button. She quickly becomes identified as ‘The Monster’ by the other animals. It takes time, but Roz is able to befriend her new neighbors.
The adopted mother of a gosling, the bringer of fire, the peacemaker. Roz teaches lessons that help all on the island. Not all is cheery; there is hardship and there is death, but these only prove to make this work more authentic.
R2D2, Johnny 5, The Iron Giant, Murderbot… I can now add Roz to my list of favorite robots. The Wild Robot is the perfect literary symbiosis of nature and machine. I was halfway done with this book and had already recommended it to two other parents.
